Microsoft has finally detailed the reason behind the company's biggest hardware controversy to date. The information came to light via a new documentary that Microsoft itself released called Power On: The Story of Xbox. The six-part documentary is currently available on YouTube, with a whole episode dedicated to the "Red Ring of Death" saga. Microsoft has acknowledged the Red Ring of Death many times in the past and has even went as far as to make some self-aware jokes on the matter.
Warning signs may include freeze-ups, graphical problems in the middle of gameplay, such as checkerboard or pinstripe patterns on the screen, and sound errors, and the console only responds to pressing the power button to turn it off.
These events may happen once or several times until the hardware failure occurs, or not at all. If the console freezes occasionally, the error will not necessarily follow. The technical problems seem to affect some generations of consoles more than others. Xenon or Zephyr. This error code is usually caused by failure of one or more hardware components, although it can indicate that the console is not receiving enough power from the power supply, which can either be due to a faulty power supply or if the power supply cable is not fully inserted into the console.
The 3 flashing lights can also be caused by power surges; if the console is connected to an outlet that receives a power surge, it may have a failure and the 3 lights will appear as long as the console is plugged into the outlet.
Turning off the console, unplugging all power cables and plugging them back in, and restarting the console will fix the issue in this case. Back in , this was a problem with most people. When you turned it on, it would have the 3 red lights Red Ring of Death and would show an error code.
A series of three red lights and a blinking green light meant that there was an internal hardware problem with the console, and that problem most often meant it had gone to the big Xbox farm in the sky.
For years, Xbox fans thought the cause of the Red ring of Death was a problem with the Xbox 's cooling system, and they were at least partially right.
Todd Holmdahl, head of Xbox hardware until , said in the documentary that most of his time at Xbox from to was spent trying to figure out the root cause of the Red Ring of Death. For months, the best of the best at Xbox scoured every component, resistor, wire in the to see what was causing the issue. It was because when the unit would get hot and then cold, hot and then cold, every time it did that it would stress the connection [between GPU and motherboard].
I have owned my box for 4 months, they have had it in the repair shop for 1 month of that. Now it will be two, tell me how that is right?
I know other have tried to help you with this and you may have posted back in June of , most do not know or may not at that time known of this, but the slim has a built in feature that when the red dots comes on, it detects your syste, is over heated and usually will not power back on until your system cools down. If many hours had passed then yea I would say to call xbox support on that situation, I believe xbox had stated any other system that got RROD or the solid red light was guaranteed repair for up to a year or two, I know other probably could correct me on that if I were wrong.
My Xbox slim GB did it this morning on the dashboard so I think I will just leave it for a while and see what happens, btw I tried the solutions other websites provided like shaking the hard disk drive but it didn't work, I'm thinking it overheated though. Looks like its becoming more common as this generation of Slims approaches 1 year I've had mine 9 months and it just crapped out. It was already having problems with the disk drawer closing on it's own and not staying open Then it constantly popped back open and wouldn't read a disk and the green light was constantly flashing.
I could still get on Live but it can't play DVDs or game disks. So much for the fancy new hardware If you can include a full description of your situation and the troubleshooting steps you have tried so far that would be very helpful and will enable us to get the troubleshooting process started.
Thanks in advance!
